Gen Z Revival?
"Gen Z Revival?" highlights a report published by Dr. George Barna and the disturbing findings from his research. This is a raw personal reaction and awakening.

Dr. George Barna, Cultural Research Center, Arizona Christian University, says, “Gen Z is moving toward faith and away from it—at the same time.”
I wrote about the Solitary Soul: God Chose You in yesterday's post. But until I read Dr. Barna’s report, I hadn’t connected it specifically to Gen Z, young people born between 1997 and 2012 (14-29 years old in 2026).
I have two Gen Z grandsons.
Gen Z Revival: Progress
On a positive note, Dr. Barna’s research indicates that weekly church attendance increased, and the number of Gen Z adults who “never” read the Bible declined.
Further, 54 percent of Gen Z adults identified as Christians, up from 49 percent; still the lowest of any generation.
From my reading, these were the most promising indicators of a Gen Z revival.
Gen Z Revival: Regress
However, more troubling news surfaced in Barna’s four-year findings. Here are a few that I believe should command our attention:
Gen Z adults are increasingly believing that marriage between one man and one woman is simply a personal preference, culturally specific, and not superior to other marital options.
Gen Z adults are increasingly preferring socialism over capitalism.
Gen Z are increasingly believing that Jesus sinned while He was on earth.
The horoscope is viewed as providing helpful guidance among Gen Z.
More Gen Z report that there is no absolute moral truth; truth is individually determined.
Only one percent of Gen Z hold a Biblical worldview.
Barna’s report shows no change over the past four years regarding Gen Z faith-related beliefs. Following are some examples:
People are basically good.
Consistent obedience to God doesn’t define success; other factors do.
Question whether the Bible is true and relevant for life today.
The core nature and existence of God.

Raw Personal Reflections
Dr. Barna’s findings are disturbing. They shine a bright light on what contemporary Christianity has become: a diluted, watered-down version of the original narrow Way.
It’s no wonder Gen Z have wandered from the faith or have yet to find it; as a whole, they have no idea what it is.
Like lost sheep, they blindly follow the world’s superhighway in search of the truth. They don’t find it and are left feeling alone, depressed, and hopeless.
They listen for the Shepherd’s voice, but only hear the chatter of deception compliments of social media and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
And what about those who stumble into a local church on any given Sunday? Some are weary from secular humanism preached in their public school classrooms and university lecture halls, only to discover words strangely reminiscent of their college professors. They say:
People are inherently good, not evil.
Love is love.
Good and bad are constructs, not reflections of truth.
Accept all people unconditionally.
Love yourself
You deserve a happy and prosperous life.
It’s all about you!
And what are they seeing in far too many churches? They are seeing blatant sin condoned, celebrated, encouraged, and practiced. They are seeing the Word polluted and subverted by the world.
What they are seeing are Christians, many of whom they admire, who attend church on Sunday and call it good. The rest of the week they see no other evidence of the Fruit of the Spirit they may have read about.
They see that we (the Church) will avoid at all costs offending someone who does not share our faith, even if it means offending Jesus in the process.
Have we forgotten that Jesus Himself was viewed as highly offensive? He challenged established societal norms and went against the religious and cultural current to save us from ourselves.
So where does this leave Gen Z?
It leaves them right where Dr. Barna’s research suggests they are.
They are seekers of God’s Truth, but find error instead in the world and then reinforced in many churches.
They introject, hook, line, and sinker, the beliefs and values they are taught at home, school, college, and the contemporary church.
So if modern-day, mature Christians read about a revival among Gen Z in progressive denominations, perhaps it would be wise for them to read Dr. Barna’s report and what it suggests.
What it suggests is that many professing Christians are causing young ones to stumble, to sin. And Jesus had something to say about that:
“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matthew 18:6, NKJV).
