Walking the Pilgrim Highway with Jesus
A reflective journal entry on solitude, faith, and the pilgrim life—walking with Jesus and sensing the Holy Spirit’s presence on the open road.

Four years ago, I was on a long stretch of open road between Fort Davis and Valentine, Texas.
I smile now as I remember the feeling—absolute peace. I was a solo pilgrim. Isolated, yes. But not alone.
Out there, you can stand in the middle of the road, take a picture, and savor the song of a hawk soaring effortlessly overhead. No traffic. No noise. Nothing to interrupt your contemplation of the Almighty.
You can feel the same breeze across your face that Nicodemus must have felt as he spoke with Jesus about where the wind comes from and where it goes.
This is where I retreat—to recharge my spiritual batteries.
So what does this have to do with Simply Walking With Jesus?
Everything.
It captures the essence of the pilgrim life.
The location matters little. Whether we’re solo in a crowded coffee shop or alone on a deserted highway, we can sense the unmistakable presence of the Holy Spirit guiding our steps.
Going solo—whether alone or in the company of others—never feels lonely.
A respected brother in Christ once said to me, “A true Christian never walks alone… he must be under the authority of a local church.”
I no longer debate the legitimacy of walking the pilgrim highway with Jesus.
Pilgrims gather when gathering happens.
Pilgrims encourage one another.
Pilgrims share the gospel daily.
It’s not an event.
It’s a way of life.
I look forward to seeing you on the pilgrim highway.
