I’m sitting here under the Golden Arches, Bible and notebook open, fishing.
Not for trout or bass… but for people.
There are mornings when I feel the call to the “fishers of men” vocation more strongly than others. And like any vocation, the longer you practice it, the more you begin to notice patterns—similar questions, familiar doubts, the same puzzled look in different faces.
One question seems to come up again and again, whether the person is a believer, a seeker, or someone who isn’t sure what they believe.
The question sounds like this:
“So what?”
I’ve yet to meet many people who have never heard something from God’s Word. Most have. But the common response is, “So what? How does that apply to my life?”
There’s a sense that the Bible may be true… but not relevant.
And interestingly, believers often ask a parallel question:
“So what do I say to unbelievers?”
See the connection?
One side wonders what the Word means for their life.
The other wonders how to explain the Word to someone else.
Both are standing at the same bridge, unsure how to cross it.
For a long time, when someone asked me how to talk to seekers, my answer was simple:
“Just share what you know.”
That made sense to me. You can’t share what you don’t know. Even men like D. L. Moody and John R. Rice said that if all you know is John 3:16, you know enough to tell someone how to be saved.
And that’s true.
But this morning, sitting here with my Bible open, the Holy Spirit corrected something in my thinking.
He showed me that I had been assuming something—that believers would keep learning, keep growing, keep filling their hearts with His Word. Because when His Word lives inside us, He can bring it out at the right moment.
And then the thought came, clear and simple:
“If you hear a ‘What if’ question… share what you hear from Me.”
Not just what I know, or what I memorized, or what I studied years ago.
What I hear from Him… now.
That’s the bridge.
And it really is that simple.
