I’m sitting here at the Pilgrim’s Desk, appreciating the warmth of my “upper room.” I’ve been out for my walk and workout, and while it wasn’t bitterly cold, it wasn’t exactly comfortable either.

Thinking about the beach on Guam doesn’t help my mental preparation for the next cold plunge into the world.

As I look out the window, I remember what it looked like in 2021 when winter storm Uri hit. We were without power for nearly four days. Our home is all electric—no generator, no wood stove—completely unprepared for that storm.

Storms come.

They come in many forms—natural disasters, personal loss, unexpected hardship, even the slow grind of daily pressures. Storms are part of the human condition.

The question is not if they will come…
but whether we are prepared when they do.

God’s Word tells us to be ready in season and out. It tells us to watch for the signs of the times. And when we look around, it can feel like storms are converging—wars and rumors of wars, uncertainty, fear, and a constant stream of troubling news.

Maybe these are the signs.
Maybe they are not.

But the larger question remains:

How prepared am I for the storms that will come into my own life?

Have I engaged in faith fitness, training my heart to endure?
Am I ready to run my race through the storm and keep my eyes on the prize?

Or have I grown weary… distracted… even numb?

Some say people have become spiritually lazy. Perhaps. But more so, I think many have grown tired—worn down by the constant psychological and emotional pounding of the world. The noise never stops. The pressures keep building. And over time, it’s easy to become detached as a way to cope.

It can feel overwhelming.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Not for those walking the narrow path.

Because God has already anticipated every storm we will ever face. And He has given us something the world cannot offer—a steady, unshakable peace.

A perfect peace. Shalom Shalom.

Not the absence of storms… but peace in the storm.

He tells us that when our mind is stayed on Him—when we trust Him—He will keep us in perfect peace. And Jesus tells us that His peace is not like the world’s peace. It doesn’t depend on circumstances.

It holds.

So whether I’m preparing for a storm…
or standing in the middle of one…

The invitation is the same:

Fix my mind on Him.
Trust Him.
Stay near.

Because the storm may still rage around me…

…but within, there can be perfect peace.

_______

You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)
