These "Notes Along the Way" are snapshots in time of my experience of simply walking with Jesus. Most of my walk with Him is outside the walls of the contemporary church. I tend to find Him "out there" away from the pews and the organization.

But I realize that I've created my own roadblocks to church attendance. Some are too liberal, condoning some sin and encouraging others. Other churches are too conservative, standing and waving the flag rather than kneeling before the cross.

And as I wander and wonder about the errors of my own ways, I'm struck by this one Truth:

Jesus doesn't change -- I need to.

I continue walking and I see in my mind Peter and Jesus walking side by side with John trailing behind. Peter asks Jesus, "What about him?" Jesus essentially reminds Peter that he doesn't need to concern himself with others, just to follow Him (see John 21:20-22). He is sovereign.

There was something both sobering and liberating about Jesus' response to Peter. No matter who I am with, I'm always with Jesus, and those in front of me and behind me. They may be seated in front of me or behind in comfortable chairs or hard wooden pews in the church around the corner. They may be on the trail or sidewalk as I listen to the Holy Spirit whispering through the cypress trees and flowing Guadalupe River.

Regardless of where I am, Jesus is the same. No matter how I follow Jesus, I am the one who needs to change--to get in step with His Walk--to align with His Spirit.

It's Sunday morning. I think I'll go to the church around the corner. Maybe I'll see you there? Whether you are here or on the other side of the world, we are all united in Jesus Christ.
