This morning, I wanted to write about two Divine Appointments.

About four months ago, I was out for a walk on the bike path. It had been raining, and mud puddles covered low-lying areas of the path.

I saw a bike rider coming toward me, a bit too fast, and not 20 yards in front of me, he hits a slick spot and goes down. I jogged over to him, asked if he was okay, and helped him get back up.

He said with a smile, “It’s all good…I’m 84 years old…I just hit that wet spot!”

He was in remarkable condition for 84. And before I knew it, he was back on the bike and speeding down the bike path without a care in the world or a scratch on his bike or body.

And then, a couple of days ago, I was out for another “walk with Jesus,” and I sensed a bike rider coming up behind me. I turned, and it was the same rider. He greeted me with a wave as he flew by. And then, as he was making a turn, he crashed again!

I couldn’t believe it.

Once again, I jog over to him as he’s picking himself up and brushing off the gravel on his knees.

Smiling and joking, he says nearly the same thing…”It’s all good…I’m 85 years old!”

I said, “You must have had a birthday because the last crash I saw you were 84!”

This time, the Holy Spirit spoke up within me. I said, “Sir, you are in great shape…still riding…living your life…but can I say a prayer for you?”

His friendly demeanor changed as he was getting back on his bike.

He looked me cold in the eye and said, “I don’t need God, I need balance.”

He rode off, and I was left saying a silent prayer on his behalf.

“It’s all good.” Those words are troubling. I wondered if those two chance meetings were wake-up calls–Divine Appointments–to say, “Are you sure?”

Because for all who say, “It’s all good!” without Jesus are just whistling past the graveyard.
