I’m sitting here at the Pilgrim’s Desk in awe of the Holy Bible open in front of me. I’ve studied many books in my life, but this one is unlike any other. It is a living communication from God Himself, revealing how His people are to live for Him.
As a Christian pilgrim, each day I try to walk the narrow path with Jesus. But it isn’t always easy to live a life that honors God’s Word while navigating a complex world.
So how do we do it?
For me, the answer is to focus on the fundamentals.
If I find myself confused about behaviors that violate God’s law, I return to something simpler—the qualities for which there is no law. The nine Fruit of the Spirit become a kind of plumb line for alignment with God. When love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are present, the path becomes clearer.
And when they begin to fade, I know I’ve strayed.
I’ve also noticed something encouraging in the words Jesus spoke through the Apostle John to the church in Philadelphia. When He commended them, the list was surprisingly simple.
They kept His Word, even when they had little strength. They were faithful.
They did not deny His name. They were loyal.
And they persevered. They endured along the way.
That’s it.
So today I wrote a simple prayer that reflects the path they followed.
Lord Jesus,
Please keep me close to You on the narrow path.
Let Your Spirit bear fruit within me.
Teach me to keep Your Word,
to never deny Your name,
and to walk with You in simple obedience,
even when I have little strength.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
